| China's Zhou Chunxiu upstaged a number of other experienced runners by taking the women's title in a time of two hours, 23 minutes and 28 seconds. This was the second Amoi Xiamen marathon for her, though she's won several domestic titles in the 5,000 and 10,000 meter run over the past years.
In the women's event, she fought a tough battle against former Asian Sports Games champion Ham Pong Sil and veteran Li Helan, en route to win this marathon gold medal.
She admitted the race track here was more difficult than that of Beijing and the climate was quite good. "The humidity is a little high, but my physical condition is staying good and I have been training here for over two months. That's why I can adapt to the weather here," said Zhou, a shy girl with a smile. "I am satisfied with my performance today."
She also acknowledged that the warm cheer of spectators on both sides of the race track impressed her very much. "They are so warm and I have to say that their support really gave me help to speed up and snatch the gold."
She hoped her win could qualify her to represent China in the coming Olympic Games. She said her goal was to place as one of the top 8 women in the upcoming marathon event in Athens. Chinese runner Zhou Chunxiu outlasts her rivals to take the women's event. |
